The 20 Grand opened for the first time in 1953. The club was rebuilt in 1958 after a fire destroyed the original structure. On the ground floor was a bowling alley with 22 lanes and a jazz room called the Fireside Lounge. On the second floor was the Driftwood Lounge and the Gold Room which featured top-name attractions and had a capacity of 1200. The list of artists that performed at the 20 Grand is a veritable who's who of Motown and includes The Temptations, The Miracles, The Tops, Martha Reeves, Jackie Wilson, Chuck Jackson, The Flamingoes, Funkadelic, Edwin Starr, The Spinners, The Marvelettes, Marvin Gaye, The Contours, The Supremes, Billy Stewart and Joe Tex.
