Born in 1920, White spent his young years sharecropping with his parents and siblings in the Mississippi Delta. In 1950, he came to Detroit, got into the junk business and continued to play the blues. He is widely credited with having kept the blues alive in Detroit. His house on 29th Street was the city's only venue for the blues, an all-weekend house party and jam legendary among blues fans and musicians.
